╨AGE 10 ├-64/128 ╦ERMIT ╒SER'S ╟UIDE
╘ROUBLESHOOTING: ╔F ┘OU ╚AVE ╨ROBLEMS
╚ERE ARE SOME COMMON PROBLEMS AND THEIR MOST LIKELY SOLU-
TIONS. ╘HE BEST TROUBLESHOOTING USUALLY COMES FROM SOMEONE
WHO HAS EXPERIENCE USING ╦ERMIT, BUT THIS ISN'T ALWAYS
AVAILABLE.
1) ╨ROBLEM: ╦ERMIT WON'T BOOT.
╙OLUTION: ═AKE SURE ALL OF YOUR EQUIPMENT IS HOOKED UP
CORRECTLY. ╔F THE RED ERROR LIGHT BLINKS ON YOUR
DISK DRIVE, YOU MIGHT A) HAVE A BAD DISK OR B) BE
MISSING THE INITIALIZATION FILE, ╦┼╥═╔╘.╔╬╔. ╙EE THE
╦NOWN ╥ESTRICTIONS SECTION OF ┴PPENDIX ┴ FOR MORE
INFORMATION.
2) ╨ROBLEM: ╔ CAN'T GET OUT OF ├ONNECT MODE.
╙OLUTION: ╥EMEMBER TO TYPE <├╘╥╠> - <┘>, LET UP, THEN
HIT THE LETTER "C". ╘HE ESCAPE CHARACTER MIGHT ALSO
BE SET TO SOMETHING OTHER THAN <├╘╥╠> - <┘>. ┘OU CAN
CHECK IT WITH THE ╙╚╧╫ ┼╙├┴╨┼ COMMAND AND CHANGE IT
WITH THE ╙┼╘ ┼╙├┴╨┼ COMMAND.
3) ╨ROBLEM: ╫HEN ╔ CONNECT TO A HOST MACHINE, ALL ╔ GET IS
GARBAGE.
╙OLUTION: ├HECK THE BAUD, PARITY AND WORD-SIZE PARAME-
TERS. ┘OU MAY HAVE TO HANG UP AND TRY AGAIN IF YOU
CHANGE SOME OF THE PARAMETERS.
4) ╨ROBLEM: ╔ CAN'T SEE WHAT ╔ AM TYPING, BUT ╔ SEE WHAT
THE HOST MACHINE IS SENDING.
╙OLUTION: ├HECK TO SEE IF THE HOST MACHINE IS SUPPOSED
TO ECHO CHARACTERS BACK TO YOU. ┘OU MIGHT NEED TO
╙┼╘ ╠╧├┴╠-┼├╚╧ ╧╬.
5) ╨ROBLEM: ╔ DOWNLOADED A BINARY FILE BUT THE FILE ╔
RECEIVED WAS GARBAGE.
╙OLUTION: ╥EMEMBER TO ╙┼╘ ┼╔╟╚╘-┬╔╘ ╤╒╧╘╔╬╟ ╧╬. ┴LSO,
CHECK THE FILE TYPE ON THE HOST ╦ERMIT. ╔T SHOULD BE
SET TO ┬╔╬┴╥┘ AS WELL AS ON YOUR END.
6) ╨ROBLEM: ┴LL OF A SUDDEN OUTPUT STOPPED APPEARING ON
THE SCREEN AND NOTHING ╔ TYPE SHOWS UP EITHER.
╙OLUTION: ┘OU MAY HAVE HIT THE <├=> KEY ACCIDENTLY,
WHICH PAUSES ALL DATA TRANSMISSION TEMPORARILY.
╨RESS IT AGAIN TO RE-START TRANSMISSION.
├-64/128 ╦ERMIT ╒SER'S ╟UIDE ╨AGE 11
┼MULATION: ╘ERMINAL-╘YPE ╞EATURES
╦ERMIT IS A VERY POWERFUL TERMINAL EMULATOR. ╞OR TEXT
DISPLAYS, IT CAN EMULATE BOTH A ╓╘-100 (WITH OR WITHOUT
ADDED ╓╘-102 FEATURES) AND A ╓╘-52. ╞OR GRAPHICS WORK, ╦ER-
MIT HAS LIMITED ╘EKTRONIX 4010 EMULATION. ┼MULATION CAN BE
TURNED COMPLETELY OFF AS WELL.
╔T IS BEYOND THE SCOPE OF THIS MANUAL TO PRESENT EACH OF THE
ESCAPE SEQUENCES THAT THESE TERMINALS USE. ╘HIS SECTION
WILL INSTEAD DESCRIBE IN GENERAL TERMS WHAT EACH OF THE EMU-
LATIONS CAN DO, AND PROVIDE A TABLE OF WHICH ╘EK COMMANDS
ARE SUPPORTED.
╓╘-100 ┼MULATION
═OST PEOPLE WILL USE ╦ERMIT'S ╓╘-100 EMULATION MORE THAN ANY
OTHER. ╘HE ─┼├ ╓╘-100 TERMINAL IS AN INDUSTRY STANDARD, AND
SO IS SUPPORTED ON VIRTUALLY EVERY MEDIUM-TO-LARGE-SIZED
OPERATING SYSTEM. ╘HE ╓╘-100 TERMINAL PROVIDES YOU WITH
MANY POWERFUL FEATURES THAT MAKE COMMUNICATING WITH A REMOTE
HOST (ESPECIALLY AT SPEEDS UNDER 9600 BPS) MUCH MORE EFFI-
CIENT AND THEREFORE, QUICKER.
╘HE MAJOR ╓╘-100 FEATURES ARE SUMMARIZED BELOW:
1) ╙CROLLING REGIONS. ╘HIS FEATURE OF THE ╓╘-100 ALLOWS
SELECTED PARTS OF THE SCREEN TO BE SCROLLED, CUTTING
DOWN ON CHARACTER TRANSMISSION GREATLY-- MAKING
TELECOMMUNICATING FASTER.
2) ╘EXT ATTRIBUTES. ╘EXT ON A ╓╘-100 CAN BE DISPLAYED IN
NORMAL OR BOLD, AND BE VANILLA, UNDERLINED, OR BLINKING
(OR ANY LOGICAL COMBINATION), AND DISPLAYED ON EITHER A
DARK OR LIGHT BACKGROUND. ╦ERMIT HAS THE ADDED FEATURE
OF SELECTABLE COLORS FOR TEXT, BOLD TEXT, DARK-
BACKGROUND, LIGHT-BACKGROUND, AND BORDER FOR MOST
SCREEN DRIVERS.
3) ╬UMERIC KEYPAD. ┴ ╓╘-100 HAS A NUMERIC KEYPAD THAT
INCLUDES FOUR PERSONAL FUNCTION (╨╞) KEYS. ╦ERMIT HAS
THIS FEATURE ON BOTH A ├-64 & 128.
4) ╟RAPHICS CHARACTERS. ┴ ╓╘-100 HAS A WIDE RANGE OF
GRAPHICS CHARACTERS THAT CAN BE USED FOR GRAPHS AND
CHARTS.
5) ╙TATUS LINE. ╦ERMIT HAS AN EXTRA 25TH SCREEN LINE THAT
CAN BE USED AS A SYSTEM STATUS LINE ON OPERATING SYS-
TEMS SUCH AS ╒╬╔╪ (╘═). ╬OTE THAT A STANDARD ╓╘-100
TERMINAL DOES ╬╧╘ HAVE A STATUS LINE.
╨AGE 12 ├-64/128 ╦ERMIT ╒SER'S ╟UIDE
╞OR A CHART SHOWING WHAT KEYS HAVE BEEN RE-DEFINED IN ╦ER-
MIT, PLEASE SEE ┴PPENDIX ├: ╦EYBOARD ╠AYOUTS. ┴LSO, IF YOU
ARE USING ╦ERMIT ON A MACHINE RUNNING ╒╬╔╪ (╘═), PLEASE SEE
┴PPENDIX ─: ╒╬╔╪ (╘═) ╘ERMCAP ╙ETTINGS, FOR INFORMATION ON
HOW TO CUSTOMIZE YOUR TERMCAP TO TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF
╦ERMIT'S FEATURES.
╬OT ALL OF THE ╓╘-100'S FEATURES WERE FEASIBLE TO SUPPORT IN
╦ERMIT. ┬ELOW IS A LIST OF THE RESTRICTIONS TO THE ╓╘-100
EMULATION:
1) ╬O 132 COLUMN MODE
2) ╬O DOUBLE HIGH/DOUBLE WIDE CHARACTERS
3) ╠IMITED TERMINAL REPORTS (ONLY THE IMPORTANT ONES ARE
EMULATED)
4) ╬O FOREIGN CHARACTER SETS
5) ╬O SMOOTH SCROLLING
6) ╬O TERMINAL ╠┼─S
╞OR RELATED INFORMATION, PLEASE SEE THE ╙CREEN ─RIVER ├OM-
PARISON SECTION.
╓╘-102 ┼MULATION
╧NLY THE FOUR MOST IMPORTANT ╓╘-102 TERMINAL FEATURES ARE
PRESENT IN ╦ERMIT. ╘HESE ARE ╔NSERT ├HARACTER, ─ELETE ├HAR-
ACTER, ╔NSERT ╠INE, AND ─ELETE ╠INE. ╘HE ╔NSERT ├HARACTER
FUNCTION, AS ON A REAL ╓╘-102 TERMINAL, IS REALLY A SWITCH-
ABLE ╔NSERT/╥EPLACE MODE.
╘HESE ADDITIONAL FEATURES ALLOW ═╒├╚ FASTER, MORE EFFICIENT
COMMUNICATION, SINCE THE ├-64/128 HANDLES MUCH OF THE TIME-
CONSUMING WORK (INSERTING AND DELETING LINES & MOVING CHAR-
ACTERS AROUND ON A LINE). ╔F YOU ARE ABLE TO UTILIZE THE
╓╘-102 FEATURES, YOU WILL BE PLEASANTLY SURPRISED AT HOW
MUCH QUICKER CERTAIN OPERATIONS ARE, SUCH AS EDITING TEXT
FILES.
╓╘-52 ┼MULATION
╦ERMIT EMULATES A ╓╘-52 TERMINAL AS A SUBSET OF ITS ╓╘-100
EMULATION, JUST AS A REAL ╓╘-100 TERMINAL DOES. ╔T IS A
COMPLETE EMULATION, EXCEPT THAT THE GRAPHICS CHARACTER SET
IS THE ╓╘-100'S, NOT A TRUE ╓╘-52'S. ┴LL OF THE REAL ╓╘-100
TERMINALS WE HAVE SEEN ALSO USE THE ╓╘-100 CHARACTER SET IN
├-64/128 ╦ERMIT ╒SER'S ╟UIDE ╨AGE 13
PLACE OF THE TRUE ╓╘-52 SET IN ╓╘-52 MODE.
╘EKTRONIX 4010 ┼MULATION
╦ERMIT SUPPORTS A LIMITED KIND OF ╘EKTRONIX 4010 EMULATION.
╘WO RESOLUTIONS ARE SUPPORTED: 320 X 200 (├-64) AND 640 X
200 (├-128 80 COL.). ┘OU CAN USE THE ╘EKTRONIX EMULATION
EVEN IF YOU ARE USING A ┬╔-80 CARD, AS ╦ERMIT WILL AUTOMATI-
CALLY SWITCH BETWEEN THE APPROPRIATE GRAPHICS SCREEN AND THE
┬╔-80. ┴LL PLOTS AND TEXT ARE PLOTTED USING THE CURRENT
CHARACTER COLOR AND ARE PLOTTED ON THE CURRENT BACKGROUND
COLOR. ┬OTH THE 320 X 200 AND 640 X 200 SCREENS ARE A LIT-
TLE TOO WIDE HORIZONTALLY SCALE-WISE COMPARED WITH A REAL
╘EKTRONIX 4010 TERMINAL. ╫E THOUGHT IT WAS BETTER TO USE
THE FULL WIDTH OF THE SCREEN GIVEN THE LIMITED RESOLUTION
THAN TO HAVE PERFECT SCALING.
╦ERMIT SUPPORTS THREE ╘EK MODES: ┴LPHA ╘EXT, ╨OINT ╨LOT, AND
╓ECTOR ╨LOT, FOR A TOTAL OF EIGHT DIFFERENT ╘EK COMMANDS.
╘HE COMMANDS ARE:
╙EQUENCE ┴CTION
<┼╙├> ╞╞ (╞ORM ╞EED) ┴CTIVATE ╘EK EMULATION AND CLEAR SCREEN
╥╙ (╥ECORD ╙EPARATOR) ╙WITCH TO INCREMENTAL PLOT MODE
╒╙ (╒NIT ╙EPARATOR) ╙WITCH TO ALPHA TEXT MODE
╟╙ (╟ROUP ╙EPARATOR) ╙WITCH TO VECTOR PLOT MODE
├┴╬ (├ANCEL) ─EACTIVATE ╘EK EMULATION AND CLEAR SCREEN
╘EK MODE IS ALSO EXITED WHEN MANY ╓╘-100/52 ESCAPE SEQUENCES
ARE RECEIVED. ╘HESE INCLUDE ANY SEQUENCES BEGINNING WITH
<┼╙├> "[" OR <┼╙├> <UPPER-CASE LETTER>. ┴LSO, ONCE ╘EK MODE
IS ACTIVATED, ANY FURTHER <┼╙├> ╞╞ SEQUENCES RECEIVED WILL
CLEAR THE CURRENT GRAPHICS SCREEN. ╞INALLY, THE CURRENT
TEXT SCREEN IS NOT SAVED WHEN ╘EK MODE IS ENTERED, AND THE
CURRENT ╘EK SCREEN IS NOT SAVED WHEN ╘EK MODE IS EXITED.
┴LPHA ╘EXT ═ODE
┴LPHA ╘EXT MODE USES THE STANDARD ┴╙├╔╔ CHARACTER SET AND
CAN DISPLAY 79 COLUMNS BY 24 LINES OF TEXT IF ╘EK MODE IS
ENTERED FROM ANY OF THE SCREEN DRIVERS EXCEPT ├-64 40
COLUMNS. ╔F ╘EK MODE IS ENTERED FROM THE ├-64 40 COLUMN
SCREEN DRIVER, UP TO 40 COLUMNS OF TEXT CAN BE DISPLAYED.
╘HIS MODE IS USED GENERALLY TO LABEL GRAPHS. ╬O ON-SCREEN
╨AGE 14 ├-64/128 ╦ERMIT ╒SER'S ╟UIDE
EDITING SHOULD BE ATTEMPTED WHILE IN THIS MODE.
╨OINT ╨LOT ═ODE
╔N THIS MODE THE DRAWING PEN IS GIVEN A DIRECTION TO MOVE
AND WHETHER TO HAVE THE PEN UP (NO LINE DRAWN) OR DOWN (LINE
DRAWN) WHEN MOVING. ╘HIS ALLOWS CONSIDERABLE FREEDOM IN
DRAWING ODD-SHAPED OBJECTS.
╓ECTOR ╨LOT ═ODE
╔N ╓ECTOR ╨LOT ═ODE, JUST THE ENDPOINTS OF A LINE TO BE
DRAWN ARE SPECIFIED. ╘HIS ALLOWS LINES TO BE DRAWN QUICKLY,
SINCE NOT ALL THE POINTS ON THE LINES MUST BE SPECIFIED
INDIVIDUALLY.
├-64/128 ╦ERMIT ╒SER'S ╟UIDE ╨AGE 15
─ISPLAYS: ╙CREEN ─RIVER ├OMPARISON
┼ACH OF ╦ERMIT'S SCREEN DRIVERS HAS DIFFERENT CAPABILITIES.
┬ELOW IS A DISCUSSION OF THE VARIOUS LIMITATIONS OF THE DIF-
FERENT SCREEN DRIVERS.
├-128 80 ├OLUMN ─RIVER
╘HIS DRIVER IS THE BEST THAT ╦ERMIT HAS. ┴LL VIDEO ATTRI-
BUTES ARE SUPPORTED WITH NO LIMITATIONS, AND THE HIGHEST ╘EK
RESOLUTION (640 X 200) IS AVAILABLE. ╘HE ONLY FEATURE NOT
AVAILABLE WITH THIS DRIVER, THAT IS ON SOME OTHERS, IS A
BORDER. ╘HIS IS BECAUSE THE ├-128'S 80 COLUMN CHIP (THE
8563 ╓─├) DOES NOT SUPPORT A BORDER.
╧NE NOTE: MANY PEOPLE WHO USE THE 80-COLUMN MODE ON THE ├-
128 DO SO ON A MONOCHROME MONITOR. ╫ITH THIS SETUP, ONLY
╘╚╥┼┼ COLORS ARE POSSIBLE: BRIGHT, NORMAL, AND BLACK. ╘HIS
CAN POSE A PROBLEM WHEN TRYING TO SET UP READABLE LIGHT- AND
DARK-BACKGROUND SCREENS. ╧NE SOLUTION TO THIS IS TO BUY A
GREY SCALE ATTACHMENT FOR THE 80-COLUMN VIDEO CABLE TO PRO-
VIDE A WIDER RANGE OF GREY SHADES.
├-64 80 ├OLUMN ─RIVER
╘HIS SCREEN DRIVER IS TRADITIONALLY THE MOST POPULAR, MAINLY
BECAUSE MORE PEOPLE HAVE ├-64S THAN ├-128S. ╫HEN USING THIS
DRIVER, EVEN ON A ├-128, THE ╘EK 320 X 200 MODE WILL BE USED
FOR GRAPHICS. ╘HIS DRIVER IS FULL-FEATURED EXCEPT FOR ONE
MINOR LIMITATION.
┬ECAUSE OF THE WAY HI-RES GRAPHICS SCREENS ARE CREATED ON A
├-64, IF TWO CHARACTERS WITH DIFFERENT ATTRIBUTES ARE PLACED
ADJACENT HORIZONTALLY, THE FIRST CHARACTER SOMETIMES WILL
NOT HAVE THE CORRECT ATTRIBUTE. ╞OR EXAMPLE, IF A BOLD
CHARACTER IS PRINTED IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWED BY A FLASHING
CHARACTER, THE BOLD CHARACTER MAY CHANGE TO A FLASHING CHAR-
ACTER. ╘HIS CAN EASILY BE AVOIDED BY INSERTING A SPACE
BETWEEN THE TWO CHARACTERS.
┬ATTERIES ╔NCLUDED ┬╔-80 ─RIVER (╙TANDARD)
╘HE ┬╔-80, AN EXCELLENT 80-COLUMN CARD FOR THE ├-64 (ALSO
├-128 IN 64 MODE), IS NO LONGER IN PRODUCTION AND GENERALLY
VERY HARD TO FIND USED. ╫E ADDED SUPPORT FOR IT BECAUSE IT
OFFERS THE SAME TEXT RESOLUTION AS THE ├-128'S 80 COLUMN
SCREEN, MAKING IT CLEARER THAN THE STANDARD ├-64 80 COLUMN
SCREEN.
╘HERE ARE SEVERAL LIMITATIONS WHEN USING THIS DRIVER. ╘HE
╨AGE 16 ├-64/128 ╦ERMIT ╒SER'S ╟UIDE
MAIN LIMITATION IS THAT THE ┬╔-80 CHARACTER SET IS NOT REDE-
FINABLE THROUGH SOFTWARE, MEANING THAT SOME CHARACTERS LIKE
THE BRACES, TILDE, UNDERSCORE, ETC., ARE NOT AVAILABLE.
┴LSO, THE ╓╘-100/52 GRAPHICS CHARACTER SET IS NOT AVAILABLE.
┴ CLOSEST MATCH WAS MADE ON MANY OF THE CHARACTERS, BUT SOME
OF THEM LOOK PRETTY UNRECOGNIZABLE.
┴LSO, THE ONLY CHARACTER ATTRIBUTE AVAILABLE IS REVERSE.
┴LL OTHER MODES, SUCH AS BLINKING, BOLD, AND UNDERLINED, ARE
MAPPED INTO REVERSE, SO YOU CAN AT LEAST TELL WHEN THE TEXT
IS NOT PLAIN VANILLA.
╞INALLY, NO COLOR CHANGE OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE AS THE ┬╔-80
CARD OPERATES ONLY IN BLACK AND WHITE MODE WITH NO BORDER.
┬ATTERIES ╔NCLUDED ┬╔-80 ─RIVER (├USTOM)
╘HIS DRIVER IS FOR USE WITH THE CUSTOM ┬╔-80 CHARACTER ╥╧═
AVAILABLE FROM ─R. ┼VIL ╠ABORATORIES. ╘HIS DRIVER MAKES USE
OF THE RE-DEFINED CHARACTERS IN THE REPLACEMENT ╥╧═. ╘HE
FULL ┴╙├╔╔ CHARACTER SET IS AVAILABLE, AS WELL AS THE ╓╘-
100/52 GRAPHICS CHARACTER SET. ┴LL OTHER RESTRICTIONS FROM
THE STANDARD ┬╔-80 DRIVER APPLY.
╨LEASE SEE ┴PPENDIX ┼: ┬╔-80 ╥EPLACEMENT ╥╧═ ╔NFORMATION FOR
DETAILS ON HOW TO OBTAIN A REPLACEMENT CHARACTER ╥╧═.
├-64 40-├OLUMN ─RIVER
╘HIS DRIVER SUPPORTS ALL CHARACTER ATTRIBUTES AND SCREEN
FUNCTIONS. ╔TS MAIN LIMITATION IS ITS WIDTH-- 40 COLUMNS IS
GENERALLY NOT VERY USEFUL WHEN COMMUNICATING WITH MOST LARGE
COMPUTER SYSTEMS.
